The Importance of Digital Signing
When it comes to deploying Android apps on the Google Play Store, security and encryption are top priorities. That’s why digitally signing your app is a mandatory step before publishing. But what does this entail? Simply put, you need a unique hash key, known as a release key, to sign your app and all future updates. This key is crucial, so keep it safe to avoid losing access to your app.
Google Play App Signing: A Secure Solution
Google provides an innovative feature called Play App Signing, which allows you to:
- Reduce your app bundle size
- Store signing keys securely using Google’s sophisticated algorithms
- Update keys in case of compromise
Generating an Upload Key
In addition to a release key, you’ll need an upload key to publish your Android app. This key is generated by you and used to sign all updates. While you can use the upload key as your release key, it’s more secure to have separate keys. If you lose your upload key, don’t worry – you can generate a new one and contact Google support to reset the key.
Creating an Upload Key with Java Keytool
To generate an upload key, you’ll need Java Keytool. Here’s how:
- For Windows: Run the keytool utility from your Java SDK location, using the following command:
keytool -genkeypair -v -keystore my-upload-key.keystore -alias my-key-alias -keyalg RSA -keysize 2048 -validity 10000
- For MacOS: Use the same command, but first locate your Java SDK using

Updating Gradle Files
After generating your keystore, update your Gradle files with the keystore information:
- Copy the keystore file to your React Native app’s android/app folder
- Open
~/.gradle/gradle.properties
orandroid/gradle.properties
and add the following references:

Generating the APK Release Build
Now you’re ready to generate the release build:
- Enter the Android directory and run the release build:
./gradlew assembleRelease
- This command will create an optimized bundle in AAB format, required for new apps since August 2021.
Testing the Release Build
Before publishing, test your release build without manually installing it on your phone:
- Run
npx react-native run-android --variant=release
- Make sure to uninstall any previous builds to avoid conflicts.
Publishing Your App
Finally, publish your app from your Google Play account, filling in required information such as app name, description, category, language, and more. Google will ask you to create a release key and manage it for you – a convenient and secure option.
