Building a Robust Inventory Management Application with Vue, Vue Router, Vuetify, and Node-Fetch

Getting Started

In this comprehensive tutorial, we’ll guide you through the process of building a robust inventory management application using Vue, Vue Router, Vuetify, and node-fetch. You’ll learn how to create a user-friendly interface, set up routes, and interact with a GraphQL server.

Prerequisites

Before we dive in, make sure you have:

  • Basic understanding of GraphQL and Vue
  • Docker, Node.js, NPM, and Git installed on your computer
  • Basic understanding of how to use Node.js and NPM

Creating the Project Structure

Let’s create a new project directory and initialize a Node.js project for our application client. Clone the repository containing the back-end code from GitHub and navigate into the inventory-management-system directory.

Setting Up the Frontend

Create a new subdirectory named client and navigate into it. Use the Vue CLI to create a new Vue project in the current directory. Select Manually select features, then choose Babel and Router. Install Vuetify using the Vue CLI and node-fetch using npm.

Creating the Application Layout and Routes

Use Vuetify to create the layout and Vue Router to handle the routes for our application client. Create a new file named App.vue and add the necessary components, including v-navigation-drawer, v-app-bar, v-main, and v-footer. Define the routes for our application, including home, users, categories, products, inventory, and orders.

Creating the Home View

Create a new file named Home.vue and add a grid of cards that display collection names and document counts. Add a click listener to each card to navigate to a specific route when clicked.

Creating the Table View

Create a new file named Table.vue and add a v-data-table component to display data for each collection. Define the fields and methods needed to manage data in our collections.

Interacting with the GraphQL Server

Create a new file named actions.js and define the methods needed to interact with our GraphQL server using node-fetch. These methods will reside in an object named actions.

Running the Application

Create the static files for our application client by running npm run build. Navigate to the root directory of our application server and create a new MongoDB instance. Install the node modules and start the GraphQL server by running npm run start. Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:4000/ to see our application in action.
