Unlock the Power of Tooltips in Your React Project
What are Tooltips?
Tooltips are those handy little boxes that pop up when you hover over an element in an application, providing extra information that users might need. And, with Tippy.js, a lightweight and easy-to-use library, you can create tooltips, popovers, dropdown menus, and more in your React project.
Getting Started with Tippy.js and React
Before we dive in, make sure you have React 16.8+, Node.js, and either npm or Yarn installed. Familiarity with JavaScript, HTML, React, and programming concepts like functions, objects, arrays, and classes will also come in handy.
Installing Tippy.js-React
Run one of the following commands to install Tippy.js-React:
npm install tippyjs-react
or
yarn add tippyjs-react
Creating a Tooltip in React
Let’s create a newsletter request form with a tooltip on the Submit button. First, import the Tippy component and core CSS:
import { Tippy } from 'tippyjs-react';
import 'tippy.js/dist/tippy.css';
Then, wrap the element you want to add a tooltip to with the Tippy component:
<Tippy content="We'll never share your email with anyone else.">
<button>Submit</button>
</Tippy>
Positioning Your Tooltip
By default, Tippy positions tooltips above elements. But, you can customize this by specifying a placement option:
- Top
- Bottom
- Left
- Right
Let’s move the tooltip to the right of the button element:
<Tippy placement="right" content="We'll never share your email with anyone else.">
<button>Submit</button>
</Tippy>
Advanced Tooltip Customization
You can add HTML blocks inside Tippy commands to change and stylize the tooltip. For example, let’s add a span tag to change the text color to orange:
<Tippy content={<span style={{ color: 'orange' }}>We'll never share your email with anyone else.</span>}>
<button>Submit</button>
</Tippy>
You can also remove the arrow on the edge of the tooltip, add a delay before the tooltip appears, and more.
