Building a Simple To-Do App with Firebase, Redux, and React

Firebase and Redux are two powerful tools that can help you build scalable and efficient applications. In this article, we’ll explore how to use them together to create a simple to-do app with user authentication.

What is React-Redux-Firebase?

React-Redux-Firebase is a library that provides Redux bindings for Firebase, making it easier to use Firebase with Redux and React. It also comes with some Hooks to simplify the implementation of Firebase functionality.

Prerequisites

Before we dive into the tutorial, make sure you have a good understanding of React, Redux, and Firebase. You’ll also need basic knowledge of React Router.

Setting Up the Project

To get started, create a new React project and install the necessary dependencies, including Redux, React-Redux, Firebase, React-Redux-Firebase, Redux-Firestore, and React-Router-Dom.

Setting Up Firebase

Next, set up a new Firebase project and enable the Cloud Firestore and authentication services. Create a new Cloud Firestore database and set up authentication with Google and email/password providers.

The SignIn Component

The PrivateRoute Component

The PrivateRoute component checks whether the user is authenticated before rendering the route component.

The AddTodo Component

The AddTodo component allows users to add new to-do items, which are stored in a subcollection called “todos” inside each user document.

The TodoItem Component

The TodoItem component displays each to-do item with a checkbox to mark tasks as completed.

The Todos Route

The Todos route displays the user’s name and a list of all to-do items, using the useFirestoreConnect Hook to listen to the “todos” subcollection.

Putting it All Together

Finally, piece together all the components and routes in your App.js file. With that, you’ve built a simple to-do app with user authentication using Firebase, Redux, and React!
