What is a Red-Black Tree?

A Red-Black tree is a self-balancing binary search tree that ensures efficient data retrieval and manipulation. Each node in the tree has an additional bit to denote its color, either red or black.

Inserting a New Node: The Key to Balanced Trees

When inserting a new node, it’s essential to maintain the balance of the tree. Here’s how it’s done:

Step 1: Create a New Node

Create a new node with the given key and assign it a red color. This node will be inserted into the tree.

Step 2: Find the Insertion Point

Compare the new key with the root key. If the new key is greater, traverse the right subtree; otherwise, traverse the left subtree. This process continues until a leaf node is reached.

Step 3: Assign the Parent and Child Nodes

Assign the parent of the leaf node as the parent of the new node. If the leaf key is greater than the new key, make the new node the right child; otherwise, make it the left child.

Step 4: Recolor and Rotate (If Necessary)

Call the InsertFix algorithm to maintain the Red-Black property if the insertion violates it.

Why New Nodes Are Always Red

Inserting a red node doesn’t violate the depth property of the Red-Black tree. If a red node is attached to another red node, it’s easier to fix this problem than the one introduced by violating the depth property.

Maintaining the Red-Black Property

The InsertFix algorithm is used to maintain the Red-Black property after insertion. It involves recoloring and rotating nodes to ensure the tree remains balanced.

Case-I: Left Child of Grandparent

If the parent of the new node is the left child of its grandparent, and the right child of the grandparent is red, set both children of the grandparent to black and the grandparent to red.

Case-II: Right Child of Parent

If the new node is the right child of its parent, assign the parent to the new node and perform a left rotation.

Case-III: Color Swap and Right Rotation

Set the color of the parent to black and the grandparent to red. Then, perform a right rotation on the grandparent.

Final Step: Set the Root to Black

After the InsertFix algorithm is complete, set the root of the tree to black.

The resulting tree maintains its balance and efficiency, ensuring optimal performance in data retrieval and manipulation.
