What is a Red-Black Tree?

A Red-Black tree is a self-balancing binary search tree that ensures efficient search, insertion, and deletion operations. Each node in the tree has a color, either red or black, which helps maintain balance and prevent the tree from becoming too skewed.

Properties of a Red-Black Tree

A Red-Black tree satisfies five essential properties:

  1. Red/Black Property: Every node is colored either red or black.
  2. Root Property: The root node is always black.
  3. Leaf Property: All leaf nodes are black.
  4. Red Property: If a node is red, both its children must be black.
  5. Depth Property: The number of black nodes from the root to any leaf node is the same.

Maintaining Balance

To maintain balance, Red-Black trees use two types of rotations: left rotation and right rotation. These rotations ensure that the tree remains approximately balanced, even after insertion or deletion operations.

Inserting Elements

When inserting a new element, the tree is traversed until an empty leaf node is found. The new node is then inserted as a red node. If the tree becomes unbalanced, rotations and recoloring are performed to maintain the Red-Black properties.

Deleting Elements

Deleting an element involves finding the node to be deleted and replacing it with its successor or predecessor. The tree is then rebalanced using rotations and recoloring.

Rotations in Red-Black Trees

There are four types of rotations:

  1. Left Rotation: Rotates the right subtree to the left.
  2. Right Rotation: Rotates the left subtree to the right.
  3. Left-Right Rotation: Performs a left rotation followed by a right rotation.
  4. Right-Left Rotation: Performs a right rotation followed by a left rotation.

Applications of Red-Black Trees

Red-Black trees have numerous applications, including:

  1. Implementing finite maps
  2. Java packages: java.util.TreeMap and java.util.TreeSet
  3. Standard Template Libraries (STL) in C++: multiset, map, multimap
  4. Linux Kernel
