Unlocking the Power of React, TypeScript, and Vite

Why React, TypeScript, and Vite?

React is a popular JavaScript library for building user interfaces, while TypeScript provides optional type annotations that help catch errors during development. Vite, on the other hand, is a fast and lightweight build tool that offers instant reloading, optimized build times, and efficient code splitting.

Benefits of Using React with Vite

  • Rapid Development Cycle: Vite’s Hot Module Replacement (HMR) feature allows for instant reflection of changes made in the browser during development.
  • Seamless JSX Support: Vite comes with built-in support for JSX, making it easy to write and update React components.
  • Efficient Bundle Size: Vite uses Rollup under the hood to generate small and efficient bundles.

Building a Blog Application with TypeScript and Vite

To get started, create a new Vite project using the following command:

npm init @vitejs/app my-app --template react-ts

This will create a new project folder with the basic file structure. Next, update the App.tsx file to add a navbar to the application’s UI:

import React from 'react';

function App() {
  return (
    <div>
      <nav>
        <ul>
          <li><a href="#">Home</a></li>
          <li><a href="#">About</a></li>
          <li><a href="#">Contact</a></li>
        </ul>
      </nav>
    </div>
  );
}

export default App;

Creating the Blog Data

Create a new file called blog.json in the project’s root directory and add the following data:

[
  {
    "title": "Blog Post 1",
    "author": "John Doe",
    "content": "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit."
  },
  {
    "title": "Blog Post 2",
    "author": "Jane Doe",
    "content": "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit."
  }
]

Creating the Blog Component

Create a new file called Blog.tsx in the components folder and add the following code:

import React from 'react';
import blogData from '../blog.json';

function Blog() {
  return (
    <div>
      {blogData.map((post, index) => (
        <article key={index}>
          <h2>{post.title}</h2>
          <p>{post.author}</p>
          <p>{post.content}</p>
        </article>
      ))}
    </div>
  );
}

export default Blog;

Performance Comparison: CRA vs. Vite

To compare the startup time of a Vite app to an app built with Create React App (CRA), we can use the performance inspection feature in Chrome DevTools. The results show that the Vite app starts 58% faster than the CRA app.
