Unlocking the Power of Routing in Nuxt 3

Mixing and Matching Static and Dynamic Text

Nuxt 3 allows developers to create complex and dynamic routes with ease. One of the key features of the routing system is the ability to mix and match static and dynamic text.

This is achieved using the : character, which denotes a dynamic segment. For example, a route with a static path of /products and a dynamic segment called id can be defined as follows:

{
  path: '/products/:id',
  component: ProductPage
}

This route will match any URL that starts with /products/ and is followed by a value for the id parameter. The value of the id parameter can be accessed in the component using the $route.params object.

Creating Partial Matches on Child Routes

Nuxt 3 also allows developers to create partial matches on child routes using dynamic parameters. A dynamic parameter is a path segment that starts with a colon : and matches any value.

For example, a route that matches any user ID can be defined as follows:

{
  path: '/users/:id',
  component: UserPage
}

This route will match any URL that starts with /users/ and is followed by a value for the id parameter. The value of the id parameter can be accessed in the component using the $route.params object.

Using Multiple Dynamic Parameters

Nuxt 3 also supports the use of multiple dynamic parameters in a single route. This allows developers to create complex routes that can match multiple values.

For example, a route that matches a product detail page can be defined as follows:

{
  path: '/products/:category/:id',
  component: ProductDetailPage
}

This route will match any URL that starts with /products/ and is followed by a value for the category parameter and a value for the id parameter. The values of the category and id parameters can be accessed in the component using the $route.params object.

Defining Dynamic Routes in nuxt.config.js

Dynamic routes can also be defined in the nuxt.config.js file. This allows developers to define routes that can be used across multiple components.

For example, a dynamic route that matches a user profile page can be defined as follows:

export default {
  routes: [
    {
      path: '/profile/:id',
      component: ProfilePage
    }
  ]
}

This route will match any URL that starts with /profile/ and is followed by a value for the id parameter. The value of the id parameter can be accessed in the component using the $route.params object.
