Mastering Internationalization in React Applications

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, building React applications that cater to diverse audiences across different regions and languages is crucial. This guide will walk you through the process of setting up internationalization in a React project using the React Intl library.

Understanding Internationalization and Localization

Internationalization (i18n) involves designing a product to be used in different locales, while localization (L10n) focuses on translating the product into a specific language. However, it’s not just about translating text; cultural differences, such as date and number formats, must also be considered.

Setting Up the React Project

Let’s start by creating a simple React project with default content in English. We’ll add support for three additional languages: French, German, and Japanese. Clone the starter files from GitHub and run npm install to create a node_modules folder.

Persisting the Selected Locale

Finally, we’ll persist the selected locale in the browser local storage using the localStorage API. This ensures that the content in the user’s preferred language is still visible on page reload and subsequent visits.
