What is Counting Sort?

How Does Counting Sort Work?

The magic begins by identifying the maximum element in the given array. Next, an auxiliary array is created with a length of max+1, initialized with zeros. This array will store the count of each element in the original array.

The count of each element is stored at its respective index in the count array. For instance, if the element 3 appears twice, the 3rd position in the count array will hold the value 2. If an element, such as 5, is absent from the array, its corresponding position in the count array will be 0.

The cumulative sum of the elements in the count array is then calculated, allowing the algorithm to place each element in its correct position in the sorted array. This process is repeated until every element has been placed, resulting in a perfectly sorted array.

The Counting Sort Algorithm

The algorithm can be broken down into four main loops, with the complexity of finding the greatest value able to be done outside the function. The overall complexity of Counting Sort is O(max+size), making it an attractive option for sorting large datasets.

Time Complexity

Counting Sort boasts a time complexity of O(n+max) in all cases, regardless of the arrangement of elements in the array. This is because the algorithm traverses the array n+max times, without performing any comparisons between elements.

The space complexity of Counting Sort is O(max), meaning that the range of elements directly impacts the amount of space required. While this may be a drawback for sorting very large integers, Counting Sort shines when dealing with smaller integers and multiple counts.
