Unlock the Power of TypeScript with React Context
TypeScript has revolutionized the way we develop applications, offering robust static type checking, improved understandability, and type inferences. When paired with React, TypeScript provides an enhanced developer experience and more predictability to projects. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore how to harness the potential of TypeScript with React Context by building a to-do app from scratch.
What is React Context?
React Context API was introduced in React v16 as a way to share data across components without passing props down at every level. It’s ideal for managing global data that’s not complex enough for a dedicated state manager like Redux or MobX.
Building a To-Do App with React Context
To demonstrate React Context, we’ll create a to-do app that uses the Context API for managing tasks and theming. We’ll use Create React App to set up a modern configuration with ease.
Project Structure
Our project structure will consist of two key files: context/todoContext.tsx
and @types/todo.d.ts
. The todoContext.tsx
file exports the created context for the to-do functionality and its provider, while the todo.d.ts
file contains type definitions for parts of the app that concern the to-do list implementation.
Defining Types with TypeScript
TypeScript allows us to define what a variable or function should expect as a value, helping the compiler catch errors before runtime. We’ll create an interface ITodo
to define the shape of a to-do object and a type TodoContextType
to export an array of to-dos and methods to add or update a to-do.
Creating the Context
React Context enables us to share and manage state across components without passing down props. We’ll create a new context and set its type to match TodoContextType
or null. We’ll also create a component TodoProvider
to provide the context to component consumers.
Using the useContext Hook
The useContext
Hook is a crucial tool in React development for efficient state management and data transfer between components. It enables components to access React context values without passing props through intermediary components. When used with TypeScript, the useContext
Hook adds an extra layer of type safety, ensuring correct types are used throughout the application.
Consuming the Context
We’ll create a form component that allows us to handle data entered by the user using the useState
Hook. We’ll use the saveTodo
function, pulled from the context object, to add a new to-do. We’ll also create a presentational component that shows a single to-do and receives the todo object and the function to update it as parameters.
Providing the Context
We’ll import the TodoProvider
component that wraps the consumers of the to-do context. This enables us to access the todos array and the function to add or update a to-do using the useContext
Hook in other components.
Implementing the React Context Reducer with TypeScript
When managing complex shared states within React Context, combining the useReducer
Hook with TypeScript helps manage the state at a higher level and share it across components, enhancing code robustness and developer experiences. We’ll rewrite our to-do application using the context reducer with TypeScript, defining action types for the reducer and creating a reducer function that handles state changes based on dispatched actions.
Theming with the Context API
We’ll explore another application of the Context API: theming. We’ll create types necessary for implementing theming, specifying the possible theme modes and properties available in the theme context. We’ll also create a ThemeWrapper
component that consumes the theme context and toggles the theme on the app.
Common TypeScript Issues with React Context
Despite its many advantages, developers often face challenges when using React Context with TypeScript. We’ll address common issues such as type assertion difficulties, handling null or undefined values, reducer function type safety, and context overuse and performance.
