Unlock the Power of Full-Bleed Layouts with CSS Grid
In the world of web design, creating visually stunning and engaging layouts is crucial. One technique that has gained popularity is the full-bleed layout, where images and sections span the entire width of the page, eliminating padding, margins, and borders. This design approach has been made possible by the advent of one-column layouts, which aim to improve readability by removing distractions.
What is a Full-Bleed Layout?
A full-bleed layout is a design technique where images and sections extend to the edges of the page, creating a seamless and immersive experience. This approach has been widely adopted in print design and has now made its way to the web.
Creating a Responsive Full-Bleed Layout with CSS Grid
In this tutorial, we’ll explore how to create a responsive full-bleed layout using CSS grid. We’ll create a layout with two types of full-bleed blocks: a full-bleed image and a full-bleed blockquote.
Step 1: Create the HTML Structure
We’ll start by creating the HTML structure for our full-bleed layout. We’ll add a .container
class to define the grid container and its child elements as grid items. We’ll also add a .full-bleed
class to the elements that will span across the entire screen.
Step 2: Add Basic Styling
Next, we’ll add some basic styling to our layout. We’ll use simple styles, but feel free to add more advanced ones to suit your needs.
Step 3: Define the CSS Grid Container
To create a full-bleed layout using CSS grid, we’ll set up a simple grid consisting of three grid columns. We’ll use the grid-template-columns
property to specify the width of the columns. To make the grid responsive, we’ll use the min()
math function, which calculates the value of two or more expressions and uses the smallest one.
Step 4: Lay Out the CSS Grid Items
In our CSS grid, we have two types of grid items: full-bleed and non-full-bleed. We’ll lay out both using the grid-column
property, which defines the location of a grid item within the grid columns.
Step 5: Set the Width of the Blockquote
For the blockquote, we’ll define a width value to make the layout look good. We’ll use the same dimensions as the second grid column.
The Final CSS Code
That’s it! Our full-bleed CSS grid layout is complete. Here’s the final CSS code:
Why CSS Grid is the Best Solution
In this tutorial, we created a full-bleed layout using CSS grid. While there are other ways to create this type of layout, CSS grid offers several advantages. It allows us to control the behavior of the surrounding white space and the full-bleed sections by making use of the underlying columns and the belonging CSS rules. Additionally, CSS grid saves us from having to use media queries, reducing the size of our CSS file and improving page load times and frontend performance.
